How UNISON policy is made

UNISON is a democratic organisation. Its rules and policies are formed at its national delegate conference which takes place every year in June. UNISON also has annual conferences for each of its service groups and self organised groups as well as the National Delegate conference.

National departments including Policy and Public Affairs and Service Groups develop and implement the policies which have been agreed by National Delegate Conference.
The National Executive Council makes policy decisions when conference is not sitting.

Who deals with what?

1. Print off the diagram and mark on it the parts of the organisation which you think can send motions directly to National Delegate Conference
2. If your branch had an issue, where would you send it?
It depends on which body can best deal with the issue...
Where would a branch go with these issues?
a) You think UNISON needs policy to deal with a new wave of privatisation in your workplace
b) You want to see a big campaign to highlight new rights against discrimination for lesbians and gay men in the workplace
c) You have an idea about encouraging branches in your region to work more closely together
d) You don't agree with government policy on employment rights and you want UNISON to challenge it

In each case mark on the diagram where you think the motion should go to. Answersb are all in the National Office quiz section.
