Aims and values
Equalities
Equalities issues are central to UNISON's objectives. The union's rules
require that elected posts and delegations are filled by women in proportion
to the number of women in the representative body (called proportionality),
and that all groups - including young members and low paid members - are
fairly represented (called fair representation).
Equalities issues such as rights for part time workers are key to the
union's bargaining agenda.

Members
- How representative is your branch?
- Find out what your branch does to ensure that all members are fairly
represented. If there are some groups who are not represented eg on
your branch committee, look through Join our Winning Team leaflet (stock
no 1034) for some ideas about improving representation in your branch.
Staff
- What does the equalities agenda mean to your work? Try to find out
by talking to colleagues how your part of the union tackles equalities
issues. Some issues to think about: equality of access; equalities in
the bargaining agenda, tackling discrimination.
